Scituate – Laurence R. “Larry” Swain of Scituate died unexpectedly on Sunday August 7, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth with his family by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol (Schupbach) Swain, daughter Janet Swain Joakim and her husband John Paul of Centerville, and son, Steven Swain and his wife Sarah of Harwich.

He was the proud grandfather of Rachael Joakim of Centerville and CA, Marissa Joakim of Centerville and Malaga, Spain, Lucy Swain and Jessie Swain both of Harwich.

He was the brother of the late Rev. Allen Swain and his wife, Marilyn of Pocasset, their daughters Sarah and Eloise, and son Shawn and their families.

He was the son of the late Laurence and Emma (Whitcomb) Swain of Braintree.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Born in November 1, 1935, he graduated from Braintree High School and attended Northeastern earning a BA in electrical engineering and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering from MIT and an MBA from Northeastern, each degree awarded with high honors.

He worked in the private sector until his retirement in 2005.

Larry was an avid sailor. He brought joy to many with his musical talent on the piano and guitar. He was a fan of traditional jazz and played piano in several Dixieland jazz bands in the Boston area.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held Sunday September 18, beginning at 3pm at the River Club in Scituate.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Larry can be made to the Scituate Animal Shelter Rt. 3A Scituate MA.

Directions to the River Club:

From the North (Boston)

• From Rt. 3, take Exit 14/Rt. 228 Rockland Nantasket
• Take a left at the lights off the exit ramp
• Go through the set of lights and follow Rt. 228 North through the town of Hingham
• At the intersection of Rt. 228 and 3A take a right onto 3A.
• Follow 3A through Cohasset until you get to the signs for North Scituate and the River Club billboard shortly after the CVS plaza on the left. Take a left
• Proceed through the lights, through North Scituate Center and just over the north river –
• Take a left at the River Club sign onto Border St. – the River club is on the right.

From the South (Plymouth Cape Cod)
• From Rt. 3 take exit 12 –
• at the off ramp take a left on to Rt. 139
• follow Rt 139 (2 ½ miles) to Rt. 3A
• Take a left onto Rt 3A, follow 3A aprox 10 miles
• Take a right at the intersection after the blinking yellow light – signs for North Scituate and the billboard for the River Club mark the turn.
• Proceed through the lights, through North Scituate Center and just over the north river –
• Take a left at the River Club sign onto Border St. – the River club is on the right.
